The time has come. Ideas and experiences of aging must be transformed and we are the ones to do it.
Yes we are!
Those of us who came of age in the 60’s got to see first hand the power of the civil rights movement, the women’s movement and the anti war movement. We witnessed the crumbling of old thought forms that were entrenched in our society for centuries and we created major, tangible change with the power of our words and deeds. The Grey Panthers were the senior arm of the movement for social justice…a mighty force in their time. Younger folks today take for granted the unfathomable advances we made back then.
Today, there is another revolution taking place. It is more internal and spiritual. Powered by Source energy, although radical, it is able to proceed more easily. We are at war with nothing. We are battling nothing. We are in a process of discovery. Who I Am? is a given. I Am a child of God. How do I want to be? What is the fantastic challenge that getting older offers? How do I want to be in my relationships? How do I want to be in relation to my body and my health? How do I want to be with my finances?
This may sound introspective and personal but it is revolutionary. As we change, the people around us change and the people around them change. Before you know it, the community has a different world-view and then that expands to the city, the state, the country.
In the past people succumbed to old age. They felt victimized by it, believing the race consciousness view that young is good and old is bad. And for all the products on the market that promise a more youthful appearance… the clock ticks. We can’t avoid it and I don’t think we want to.
So how do we coach ourselves toward a new awareness of the privilege of age and coax ourselves away from old beliefs that would make us fearful and distressed?
I am talking about making a commitment to creating a new and empowered lifestyle, moment by moment. It is the commitment that is so important because it is easy to get sidetracked and brought down by the low vibrational conversations we have with our self and others about age that reinforce what society would have us believe.
It is commitment and intention that have traction here. That is the first step. How badly do I want to have a grace-filled experience of aging? Once the possibility is recognized, each and every moment becomes an opportunity to create joy and happiness. How is that possible? It is the practice of being in the now.
We have multiple spiritual tools to choose from. In any situation there is a tool or a process to assist us in centering, raising our vibration, forgiving, letting go, being grateful…essentially we use any of our tools to come home to Spirit. This is the place where the Love and Peace are waiting for us. This is the state of consciousness where all is well.
So why not grab a friend. Create a buddy system where you support each other in using and refining your tools on a daily basis. You can have a check in system. You can be prayer partners. You can pray with each other or you can agree to hold your partner in prayer for whatever issue s/he is dealing with. You can have a spiritual book club. Any and all activities support the commitment and intention to ‘keep your sunny side up’.
Realizing that we are a part of a movement is motivating. Any and all ways in which we become more peaceful and happy contribute to the world’s happiness as well as our own. This is so crucial at this time in our history.
So let’s do it!
